Best-Selling Author Visits Auglaize County

The Astronaut Wives Club book coverIn celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon, we have invited Auglaize County to participate in a Community Read of Lily Koppel’s popular book, The Astronaut Wives Club.  Koppel’s book follows the changes in the lives of the families of our earliest astronauts and how the national spotlight dramatically impacted their identity and roles in their families and communities. We invite all members of the community to read the book and engage in a discussion with your thoughts and impressions. A few chances to join a discussion group still remain. Click here to see the calendar.

The 2019 Anniversary Committee and Auglaize County Libraries are excited and fortunate to host author Lily Koppel in Auglaize County on Thursday, March 21, as the culminating event for our inaugural Community Read.  Ms. Koppel will speak in the auditorium at Wapakoneta Middle School at 7:30pm, where she will discuss her journey of researching and writing The Astronaut Wives Club.  You can purchase $5 tickets for this event at all Auglaize County Library locations, the St. Marys Community Library, The Wapakoneta Daily News, or Riverside Art Center in Wapakoneta.  After the program, attendees will have the opportunity to meet Ms. Koppel and have their books signed.  Both The Astronaut Wives Club and Koppel’s first book, The Red Leather Diary, will be available for purchase at the event.

Publishers are limiting your use of eBooks and eAudiobooks through the Auglaize County Libraries

You know that book that’s at the top of your “Must Read” list? Imagine grabbing your tablet and searching the library’s catalog only to find that the eBook you wanted is unavailable. That’s what will happen under the new policies the major publishers have for public libraries. The new terms restrict how libraries can purchase and circulate eBooks and eAudiobooks. Here’s the situation:

·        None of the big publishers are selling or licensing eBooks and eAudiobooks to public libraries in the same way they do print copies.

·        Libraries are limited on the number of copies they can purchase, as well as when and how long they can be active in the library’s catalog.

·        In some cases libraries are being denied access to the electronic new releases.

·        These changes will make it impossible for libraries to provide equal access to information and hurt Ohioans who depend on the library the most.

Auglaize County Libraries has promoted eBooks and eAudiobooks usage for more than 12 years, long before it was as popular as it is today. In fact, over 31,000 eBooks and eAudiobooks were borrowed from the Auglaize County Libraries last year.

The costs associated with eBooks and eAudiobooks are rising as well. Libraries are often required to pay several times the retail price and now may be forced to re-purchase popular titles every two years. Auglaize County Libraries spent over $17,000 in 2018 on eBooks and eAudiobooks.

We hope to reverse or modify these new policy changes by working with the publishers and authors, as well as library consortia, our state and national library associations, and other stakeholders. We will keep you updated on the situation.

Thank you for your loyalty and your valuable time.

Sincerely,

Beth Steiner

Director
